The City of Park Hills extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who organized and attended the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening for The REEF at Columbia Park. This monumental event welcomed more than 600 visitors through the gates, marking a historic moment for our community.
Special thanks go to Mayor Stacey Easter, all the City Council Members - current & past, and all of our dedicated City Crews. We also want to extend our appreciation to the family members of these groups. Most importantly, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to our community. The success of this project was a result of a massive undertaking that involved the collaborative efforts of countless individuals. We are indebted to everyone who contributed to making The REEF at Columbia Park a reality. The dedication plaque on the wall of the new pool beautifully encapsulates this sentiment, expressing our gratitude to the Voters and Residents of the City of Park Hills, whose unwavering support and commitment made The REEF at Columbia Park a reality.
The history of the Park Hills Pool, located in Columbia Park, dates back to its official opening in July 1958. After serving the community for sixty-three years, the pool faced severe deterioration and increased maintenance costs, leading to its closure at the end of the 2021 swim season. Despite surpassing the average life expectancy of a pool, the unwavering dedication of City employees allowed us to prolong its operation. However, the pool had worn beyond repair.
In April of 2022, 3/4 of the voters approved PROP Swim, a $3.5 million General Obligation Bond that paved the way for the construction of The REEF at Columbia Park, a new aquatic center that is now the pride of Park Hills.
Its name, REEF, symbolizes the unity of four towns - Rivermines, Elvins, Esther, and Flat River - that came together to form Park Hills. This highly anticipated project has been in the planning and construction stages since 2022 and boasts the following features:
- Modern Design: The architecture is both visually appealing and functional for all swimmers.
- Multiple Pools and Splash Pad: Includes a main pool for lap swimming and recreation, along with a separate children's pool with a Splash Pad and interactive water features.
- Water Slides and Lazy River: Thrill-seekers can enjoy water slides while others can relax and float along the Lazy River
- Enhanced Concession Stand and Picnic Area: Offers a wider variety of snacks and a picnic area for families and groups to enjoy.
- Adequate Parking: Ample parking is available for visitors during the summer months.
The REEF at Columbia Park aims to be a significant attraction for both residents and tourists, providing a safe and enjoyable swimming environment. The facility is designed to be accessible and affordable, ensuring that everyone in the community can enjoy the benefits of this wonderful new addition.
