For generations, Rory the Whale has been a cherished fixture in the lives of Park Hills residents, delighting children and adults alike with its whimsical charm. Originally constructed in 1963 by local artisan Pete Harris, this massive concrete sculpture was a beloved centerpiece of the Flat River Swimming Pool for nearly six decades.
As the years passed, Rory became more than just a decorative attraction; it evolved into a symbol of the community's shared experiences and treasured memories. Countless children grew up splashing in the waters spewed from Rory's mighty spout, creating an indelible bond between the colossal whale and the residents it captivated.
However, when the aging Flat River Swimming Pool faced inevitable closure in 2021, the future of this iconic landmark hung in the balance. The prospect of losing Rory, a recognizable icon woven into the fabric of Park Hills' identity, was unthinkable. As plans for the state-of-the-art REEF facility took shape, a unanimous decision was made – Rory must remain.
What followed was a heartwarming testament to the community's unwavering devotion to its beloved whale. After 58 years of faithful service, Rory was in a brittle, nearly broken state. With utmost care, the sculpture was meticulously removed and underwent extensive restoration during the construction of The REEF.
On May 21st, 2024, during the grand opening celebration of The REEF at Columbia Park, Rory the Whale was officially dedicated to its new home, restored to its former vibrant blue glory. The ceremony was a poignant moment, not only welcoming Rory to its new surroundings but also honoring its creator, the late Pete Harris.
Six of Harris' nine children, along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other family members, attended the event, their hearts swelling with pride as they witnessed the enduring legacy of their loved one's craftsmanship. For them, and for the entire community, Rory's presence at The REEF represents a cherished connection to the past, while simultaneously embodying the promise of new adventures and memories yet to be made.
As visitors young and old flock to The REEF, they will once again be greeted by the friendly face of Rory the Whale, a beloved icon that has transcended its role as a mere sculpture to become an integral part of Park Hills' identity – a living embodiment of the community's spirit, resilience, and enduring love for its aquatic traditions.
